It was an exciting first morning in the PNC/KHSAA Sweet Sixteen tournament with games between George Rogers Clark and Oldham County opening the tournament, followed by Warren Central and one of the tournament favorites Louisville Eastern.
George Rogers Clark beat Oldham County by putting on a defensive clinic with the final score showing 56-59. GRC with Vinny Zollo and Corey Rogers were too difficult for Oldham County to contain down low. Zollo finished with 10 points and Rogers finished with a game high 26 points and also won the player of the game title. Rogers’ 6-5 255 pound frame proved to be too much for the thinner Oldham County team who could get nothing close to the basket. GRC will play Eastern on Friday at 12:00 pm.
In a much tighter affair was Louisville Eastern and Warren Central. Eastern surged ahead 26-22 at the half, half in which the score was only 10-6 in the second quarter after a fast paced first half. During the second half the action picked up with both teams registering dunks and hitting threes which proved to be the most raucous atmosphere of the morning. A close call went Eastern’s way with 9 seconds left when the ball was knocked out of bounds and ruled out on Warren Central. Eastern knocked down both free throws and with a 3 point deficit, Jordan Shanklin of Warren Central took a 3 at the buzzer that went in and out to allow Eastern to survive. Eastern was led by the trio of Kameron Woods (12 points), Remy Abell (13 points) and Lyonell Gaines (21 points). Warren Central was paced by Jordan Shanklin (18 points) and George Fant (21 points and 10 rebounds).
Eastern will play George Rogers Clark at 12 pm on Friday.
