Session 2 during the evening of opening day of the PNC/KHSAA Sweet Sixteen featured a pair of double digit wins. The opening round game was won by Christian County, and Lexington Catholic won the nightcap.
Anthony Hickey and Christian County pounced on the defending State Champion Shelby Valley early in route to a 21-4 lead early in the first quarter and it didn’t get much better for Valley later in the game. At the half Christian County had a commanding lead of 45-16, which only grew during the second half. Christian County used a ferocious press and a highly efficient offense to widen the margin. Anthony Hickey led all scorers with 19 points using his quickness to penetrate and pure shooting stroke to pace the game. Donovan Gates also had 18 for Christian County. The final margin read: Christian County 83 Shelby Valley 40.
The nightcap of Thursday’s opening round was between Lexington Catholic and Dixie Heights. Lexington Catholic used its patented press to disrupt Dixie’s rhythm throughout the entire game. Seth Beckham continually got into the lane against Dixie and found open teammates or finishing himself. Dixie tried to rally in the second half led by a surge from freshman Brandon Hatton but never cut the lead under 7. Lexington Catholic ended up winning by double digits in an up and down affair that had its share of turnovers. Lexington Catholic was led in scoring by Scott Schuette with 21 and Taylor Martin with 16. Dixie was led in scoring by Brandon Hatton and Zeke Pike with 16 a piece. The final score read: Lexington Catholic 69 Dixie Heights 50.
Lexington Catholic will play Christian County on Friday at 1:30 pm.
